Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I donated a horse for (use in) the cause of Allah, and the one who had it neglected it. I intended to buy it (back), and I supposed that he would sell it cheaply. So I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "Do not buy it, and do not take back your charity, even if he gives it to you for a dirham; for the one who takes back his charity is like the one who returns to his vomit." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
"Hamaltu ala farasin fi sabil Allah (I donated a horse for the cause of Allah)": that is, I gave it as charity to one of the fighters (mujahidin). "The one who had it neglected it": that is, he did not treat it well with feeding, nor did he take care of it. "Bi-rukhsin (cheaply)": that is, at (a low) price, because of its weakness and emaciation. "For the one who takes back his charity": that is, even by buying it (back) from the one to whom it was given as charity.
